BMI and strength training: understand the limits

Learn what BMI measures, why it cannot separate muscle from fat, and how to keep a single number in context.

Body mass index, or BMI, relates weight to height. It is a simple calculation, which also means it leaves out a great deal of information about an individual person.

What the calculation uses

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. An illustrative example of 80 kg and 1.80 m gives a BMI of about 24.7. The TrainAI BMI calculator accepts metric or imperial inputs and is intended for adults aged 20 and over.

What the number cannot separate

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where body fat is distributed. It also does not describe your strength, endurance or the quality of your diet. The CDC adult BMI calculator describes BMI as a screening measure rather than a diagnosis.

Someone who strength trains should therefore avoid using a BMI result alone to decide what to do next. The same caution applies to anyone trying to infer their health from one calculator output.

Keep training progress in its own record

Use your workout log to track the activities you perform, the equipment and loads involved, and your ability to repeat a routine. Those entries answer different questions from a height-and-weight calculation. A single metric does not have to serve as a score for every part of your wellbeing.

Check the measurement before interpreting it
